Simplified form (簡體). 二 (èr, "two") is identical in simplified and traditional — two parallel horizontal strokes so elemental that they require no explanation. As the number two, it appears in 贰 (the financial numeral "two"), 仁 (benevolence, literally "two persons"), and 哥 (older brother, originally "two mouths"), among countless compounds.

Two. Two parallel horizontal strokes, the simplest of numerals, representing the quantity after one. In oracle bone inscriptions the strokes were nearly equal in length, symbolizing a pair, a duplication, the fundamental binary. Thus two lines signify two, the first even number, the simplest repetition of unity.
