Modern simplified form (簡體). 亮 (liàng, "bright") appears identical in simplified and traditional — its structure of a roof-like top (亠) above a figure (儿) and table (几) evokes light shining from within a shelter. The character has meant "bright, clear" since ancient times, and appears in 明亮 (bright), 响亮 (loud and clear), and 亮相 (to appear on stage).

Bright. The character is composed of the cover radical (亠) at the top, the child radical (儿) in the middle, and the moon radical (月) at the bottom; the moon provides the semantic clue for brightness, while the cover and child components originally served as phonetic and structural elements, together conveying the idea of shining like the moon. In oracle bone script the character appeared as a figure under a roof with the moon, representing the luminous quality of moonlight.
