Shuowen
修 is formed from 攸 (the phonetic element) and 彡 (the semantic element suggesting decoration). In its earliest oracle bone form, it pictures a hand holding a blade to trim hair, an act of adornment. The original meaning thus is “to trim, to adorn,” later extended to “to repair, to cultivate.”
