Shuowen

傻 is a later character not found in oracle bone inscriptions, formed by combining the human radical 亻 with the component 夋 on the right; 夋 originally depicted a slow, crawling motion and carried the sense of being dull or sluggish. When paired with the human radical, the combination came to denote a person whose mental faculties are slow, i.e., a fool or simpleton. The written form therefore visually represents a person (亻) with a dull (夋) nature, capturing the meaning of “stupid” or “foolish.”
