參 (cān, "to participate") preserves its ancient astronomy in the traditional form: a person standing beneath three radiating stars, originally depicting the Orion belt constellation that ancient Chinese called the "Three Stars." The simplified 参 retains only the silhouette of this celestial picture, losing the luminous rays that once made its meaning unmistakable. In compounds like 參觀 (to visit), 參考 (to reference), and 參加 (to join), the character carries forward its original sense of joining something greater — whether a gathering of stars or a gathering of people.

参 depicts the constellation of Orion with its three distinctive belt stars, represented by the three strokes at the bottom (彡), while the upper portion shows the heavenly figure or altar from which the stars were observed; the oracle bone form clearly shows three star-points suspended beneath what appears to be a ritual object or celestial diagram. This astronomical character was adopted to mean "to join, participate, or inspect" because joining the stars in observation was essential for calendrical reckoning, and by extension, one who joins or takes part in affairs.
