双shuāng

The traditional form 雙 makes its meaning unmistakable: two hands (又又) reaching together, the ancient pictograph for a matching pair. The simplified 双 preserves this doubled structure while shedding strokes—a rare case where less actually loses little of the visual logic. As a measure word for pairs, from shoes to chopsticks, it still carries that sense of things that come in twos.
