室shì

The simplified form 室 maintains the same structure as its traditional counterpart — a roof (宀) over 至, the latter originally depicting an arrow reaching its target, later evolving to mean "to arrive." This room or chamber represents the place where one settles, the interior space of a dwelling. In modern usage, it appears in 教室 (classroom), 卧室 (bedroom), and 办公室 (office), each compound preserving the sense of an enclosed, designated area.
