家jiā

The simplified 家 drops the traditional pig (豕) to a single stroke, but the roof (宀) remains — a visual shorthand for the home that has survived every reform. In compounds, 家 appears in 嫁 (marry into a family), 稼 (sow grain), and 嫁 (嫁 again, for emphasis), each extending the core idea of household or family membership. The character has become so common in modern Chinese that speakers rarely pause to see the pig beneath the roof, yet that ancient image of a roof over a pig — the basic unit of a prosperous homestead — still lives in every instance of the character.
