方fāng

Modern simplified form (簡體). 方 (fāng, "square, direction") preserves its ancient shape of a flag on a pole, representing a banner or a directional sign. As a radical, it appears in 放 (fàng, "to release"), 房 (fáng, "house"), and 旁 (páng, "beside").
