暖 (nuǎn). The modern form 暖 combines the sun radical 日 with the phonetic 爰, but ancient forms used fire 火 to indicate warmth. In oracle bone inscriptions the character depicts a fire under a shelter, symbolizing the act of warming. The later shift to 日 emphasizes warmth from sunlight, preserving the original sense of warmth.
