Shuowen

站 (zhàn) consists of 立 (to stand) on the left and 占 as a phonetic on the right, originally meaning 'to stand' or 'to be stationed'. The earliest known forms appear in bronze inscriptions, though the component 立 is already present in oracle bone inscriptions as a pictogram of a person standing. The combination of 立 and 占 was chosen to convey the idea of a fixed place where one stands, later extended to mean a station or stop.
