Basket. The bamboo radical (竹) at the top indicates the material—baskets were woven from bamboo strips—while the 监 component below provides the phonetic sound. In oracle bone inscriptions, the character already depicted a bamboo container with a woven texture, the natural choice for a basket before later standardization. The combination reflects both what the basket is made of and how it was named.
