Shuowen
赢 (yíng) – The ancient form shows a hand (又) grasping a shell (贝) and a piece of meat (月), a pictogram of gaining profit; the “亡” component supplies the phonetic, while “口” (mouth) and “凡” (all) were added later to emphasize the idea of “speaking (victory) to all”. The composite thus conveys “to obtain wealth” and, by extension, “to win” in later usage.
