雨. The character depicts a horizontal line representing the sky, with four droplets falling beneath it to symbolize rain. In oracle bone script this was a direct pictogram of precipitation from the heavens, and the form has remained essentially unchanged since the Shang dynasty, preserving that primordial image of water falling from the clouds above.
