Shuowen

頁 (yè) originally depicted a human head in the oracle bone script, combining the pictogram of a skull (囟) atop the figure of a kneeling person (儿), thus signifying “head.” The component later became a radical used for words relating to the head, such as 項 (neck) and 順 (smooth), while its shape also suggested a leaf, leading to the extended meaning of “page” in later writing. The character is written with 儿 and 囟 because that composition directly represents the head, reflecting its ancient pictographic origin.
