Shuowen
众, in oracle bone script, is depicted as three human figures (人) standing side by side, forming a triangular arrangement that signifies a multitude. The triple person sign was chosen to visually convey the idea of many people gathered together. Consequently, the character came to mean “crowd” or “the masses”.
