寫 (xiě, "to write") evolved from an original sense of releasing or letting fly — the 宀 (roof) sheltering 舄 (a bird or footprint) suggested freeing something into expression. The simplified form 写 emerged from草书 cursive strokes that compressed the bottom into a single stroke, yet the logic of "putting thoughts down" remains intact. Today it anchors compounds from 寫字 (to write characters) to 描寫 (to describe), each carrying that core idea of externalizing what lies within.
