Shuowen
写. In the earliest form the character shows a hand (又) holding a brush (the precursor of 筆) pressed against a surface, representing the act of inscribing or drawing. Later a roof (宀) was added to emphasize the place of writing, but the core hand‑brush motif remains, giving the modern meaning 'to write'.
