又 (yòu) - The pictograph of a right hand with fingers spread, representing the act of reaching or grasping. From this concrete image of a reaching hand came the extended meanings of "again" and "also," as the hand returns to repeat an action. The five strokes of the modern character still trace back to that ancient hand shape, with three fingers reaching outward and the wrist curving below.
