Modern simplified form (簡體). 坐 (zuò, "to sit") appears identical in traditional script — a rare case where even the reformers found nothing to improve. The character pictures two people (人) seated upon the ground (土), a pictographic scene so universally recognizable that it has endured unchanged for millennia. It appears as a component in 挫 (frustrate), 痤 (boil) and 锉 (file), grounding each with its ancient imagery of rest.

Shuowen

坐. The oracle bone shows two figures seated on the ground with legs folded, a pictogram of sitting. The modern form places two human signs 人 over the earth radical 土, emphasizing the act of resting on the ground. Hence 坐 denotes to sit or be seated.
