Shuowen
样 consists of 木 (wood) and 羊 (sheep), the latter providing both sound and meaning. The earliest oracle bone forms show a wooden figurine of a sheep, a template or sample used in rituals. From this concrete model the character came to denote 'shape, form, example' in later usage.
