Shuowen
港 (gǎng) combines the water radical 氵 with the phonetic and semantic component 巷, the latter originally a pictogram of a narrow street or lane. Oracle bone examples show water beside a lane, indicating a landing place where vessels can dock. The water radical marks the location as a waterway, while 巷 provides both the sound and the notion of a passage, giving the modern sense of a harbor or port.
