Shuowen

In the oracle bone inscriptions, 给 was a pictograph of a hand offering silk, representing the act of giving; later the hand and silk simplified into the silk radical 纟, and the phonetic element 合 was added, yielding the modern form. The character thus combines the silk radical (representing the valuable material) with the phonetic 合, originally meaning to give or offer silk, and later extended to mean to give in general.
